In addition to celebrating, The Independence Fund is recognizing Wounded Heroes Day by acknowledging the burden of war that Veterans may carry for decades post-combat.
The Independence Fund, in partnership with panelists including Tim Kennedy, Dan Hollaway, and Tulsi Gabbard, will host Targeting A Solution on Saturday, April 20.
Staggeringly, the number of service members lost to suicide after combat is four times higher than the number we lost on the front lines of two decades of war post-9/11. Each of those numbers represents a hero… a family… a story of sacrifice.
Targeting A Solution is a candid, unfiltered conversation about the realities of Veteran suicide — and, most importantly, how we can end it together. You're invited to be a part of the dialogue: And the solution.

About Wounded Heroes Day:
On April 24, 2010, SGT Michael Verardo suffered life-altering combat injuries in an IED explosion while serving in Afghanistan. Since that fateful day, SGT Verardo has undergone 120 surgeries, along with years of speech, visual, physical, and occupational therapies. Verardo, like so many other catastrophically wounded, injured, and ill Veterans, brings the scars of war back home. Wounded Veterans continue showing displays of courage and resilience as they overcome new challenges and obstacles. The Independence Fund and the state of North Carolina are committed to honoring the sacrifice, courage, and resiliency of this brave group of servicemen and women. On April 24, 2021, the state of North Carolina passed House Bill 138/Senate Bill 132 designating every April 24th as Wounded Heroes Day. The Independence Fund and NC General Assembly Members, led by Representative David Willis, acknowledge that when a service member returns home with life-changing injuries, the entire family absorbs the sacrifice and adjusts life to care for the wounded Veteran.Wounded Veterans across North Carolina, on behalf of SGT Verardo and The Independence Fund, we are proud to honor you each and every Wounded Heroes Day.
