Veterans Justice Initiative (VJI)

The Veterans Justice Initiative (VJI) addresses the unique mental health needs facing the Veteran community, particularly post-9/11 combat Veterans. VJI strives to avoid the criminalization of mental illness, substance abuse, and incarceration among Veterans by intervening on behalf of eligible Veterans at the outset of their contact with the criminal justice system. VJI was launched with funding provided by the “No Veteran Left Behind Act” in North Carolina. This funding enabled The Independence Fund to institute a comprehensive three-pillar approach aimed at equipping first responders and community partners in their interactions with Veterans. These pillars include Veterans Crisis Intervention Training, casework assistance, and support for counties in establishing Veterans Treatment Courts.
