Founded in 2007, The Independence Fund is committed to empowering our nation’s catastrophically wounded, injured, or ill Veterans to overcome physical, mental, and emotional wounds incurred in the line of duty. We are dedicated to improving the lives of both our Veterans and their families. Through our Mobility, Caregiver, Advocacy, Casework, Operation RESILIENCY, Independence@Home and Family programs, The Independence Fund strives to bridge the gap of unmet needs for Veterans and their Caregivers.
Our CEO, Sarah Verardo, was appointed in 2017. Under her leadership, The Independence Fund has been a stalwart in financial stewardship, donor integrity, and transparency.
As a Caregiver to her husband, a catastrophically wounded Veteran, Sarah knows firsthand the challenges faced by Veterans and their loved ones and strives to lead the organization with the compassion, care, and sense of empowerment this community of heroes deserves.

For Veterans returning home with the scars of war, the fight doesn’t end upon their arrival. The Independence Fund’s Advocacy team fights on Capitol Hill to ensure the needs of our nation’s heroes are met.
The Independence Fund serves the Caregivers of our nation’s heroes by providing resources, opportunities for respite, and a community for peer-to-peer support and empowerment.
Supporting a Veteran’s entire family is the only path towards full independence. The Independence Fund’s Family program provides Veteran families with opportunities to engage in exciting and uplifting activities alongside their peers.
Many severely wounded Veterans have lost the ability to experience activities they previously enjoyed, like hunting and fishing. Our hallmark Mobility program gifts Veterans with equipment and opportunities to take back their independence.
The Independence Fund has always believed in fairness and equality for all Veterans and families irrespective of race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation, and we will continue to uphold these American values.
